10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, an extremist Islamist terrorist organisation based in Pakistan, carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai.The attacks began on Wednesday 26 November and lasted until Saturday 29 November 2008. At least 174 people died, including 9 attackers, and more than 300 were wounded.Indian Armed Forces, along with the paramilitary forces successfully stopped these bombings. Our military then went into many changes and many new offices were established after this incident including the National Investigation Agency.
The commandos are given basic training in arms, ammunition, explosives, unarmed combat, close quarter battle, jungle warfare tactics, para-jumping, kayaking, photography, ship intervention drills, hostage rescue, and recapture of offshore installations.
Post basic training, they join Prahars, and then undergo specialised training to integrate as locals in 'target areas'.
The MARCOS were the first of the elite commandos deployed that night(Mumbai attacks) and responded swiftly by containing the spread of chaos tactically.
The National Security Guard are Special Forces of the country and it is intended for use "only in exceptional situations". The gruelling training ensures that only the crème de la crème are selected.
Physical fitness training has 26 elements, ranging from a cross-country obstacle course to jumping from heights and across divides and scaling different kinds terrain.
One endurance test involves martial arts, target shooting at the end of an obstacle-ridden cross-country run.
This is meant to gauge the candidate’s performance under conditions of stress and exhaustion.
The National Security Guard (NSG) commandos arrived at the site of terror from their base in Manesar, after about seven hours of the siege, and the 51 Special Action Group began to engage the terrorists.
Although outnumbered, they managed to evacuate a record number of hostages and neutralised the terrorists under extreme duress. It is estimated that the NSG intervention helped end the attack significantly sooner, as later data revealed that the terrorists were equipped with ammunition for about two days.
